| Andrew Jakob conducted the Isle of Axholme Orchestra for seven years from its foundation in September 2000 to March 2007, and Room21 community jazz band from 2002 - 2005. He studied bassoon with Geoffrey Gambold and Martin Gatt. Since leaving the Royal College of Music in 1979 with an ARCM, he has pursued an active career as a freelance player working with BBC Concert Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, RTE Symphony and Concert Orchestras, Seville Symphony Orchestra, Welsh National Opera, English Northern Philharmonia and the East of England Orchestra. He has performed solo concertos at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, Pump Rooms in Bath as well as recitals with the Nova Marlborough Wind Quintet at the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He taught bassoon and saxophone at both St. Pauls Girls and Boys Schools for seven years as well as holding many general woodwind posts. Since moving to North Lincolnshire in 1993, he has taught general woodwind for North Lincolnshire Council. He performed as soloist with the Lincoln Pro Musica in 1997, is a member of Hull Sinfonietta and is a regular guest player for the Scarborough Spa Orchestra and the local orchestras and choral societies of Hull, Lincoln, Louth, Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Goole and Beverley. Although he now plays and teaches all woodwind instruments, the bassoon is still very much his passion. In March 2007, Andy performed pieces by Wolf-Ferrari and Elgar as soloist with Lincoln Symphony Orchestra at The Drill Hall, Lincoln. Since 2004, he has held a full-time woodwind post for the Lincolnshire Music Service and is woodwind coach for the Lincolnshire Youth Symphony Orchestra. He has coached on the International Woodwind Summer School in Harrogate, and in 2006 conducted a programme that included Brahms Third Symphony as guest conductor for Hessle Sinfonia. Andy enjoys composing and arranging especially in the lighter styles. He composed Big Girls Blues for Room21, and two other works for woodwind ensembles have been published by Spartan Press. Other compositions include some very cool pieces for five bassoons which he plans to use to encourage awareness of the bassoon generally. In
his spare time he runs Red Letter Music, which provides a saxophone quartet
and woodwind ensemble for occasional music. He is a keen golfer but swings better
with a saxophone. |
