| Epworth Bells 18 July 2002 New swing band goes down a treat with regulars Epworth's Old School Inn provided the perfect setting for a performance by a new local swing band called Room 21. The band has only been together for 11 weeks and was formed under South Axholme Community School's Arts College Community Projects Programme. Encouraged and developed by its enthusiastic conductor, Andy Jakob, the band has taken great strides in that time, as its performance demonstrated. Room 21's music was very well received by a large number of pub goers and music lovers, who packed the functions room at the Old School Inn, curious to hear what the band could do. The repertoire was a varied one and included such favourites as Billy Joel's 'My Life', 'Opus One' by Sy Oliver, 'Satin Doll' by Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer and Billy Strayhorn, and 'Stray Cat Strut' by Brain Setzer. The ten instrumentalists were joined by local well known singer Barry Scully, in several numbers including 'Hello Dolly' from the musical by that name, Hoagy Carmichael's 'Georgia on my Mind' and the Beatles number 'And I Love Her'. Named after its rehearsal venue at South Axholme Community School, the band Room 21 has brought together a talented group of musicians of all ages whose obvious enjoyment of their own music making was clear for all who attended to see. The event was a wonderful and highly successful pinnacle, following a term of 11 rehearsals demonstrating that musical performance in this style is all about enjoyment and relaxed ensemble participation. A raffle drawn during the event raised over £75, which was presented to the Old School Inn's British Heart Foundation fund-raising appeal. |
| Scunthorpe Telegraph 10 July 2002 Musicians get Epworth swinging A brand new band is hoping to get Epworth 'swinging' on a regular basis after holding its first public performance. Having honed their skills through 11 rehearsals, the Room 21 swing band members brought the house down at the Old School Inn in Epworth at a gig last week. Named after their rehearsal room at the South Axholme Community School, the band played a range of classics including music by Billy Joel and the Beatles. Support also came from vocalist Barry Scully, who joined the band on a rendition of Hello Dolly, from the well-known musical. The 10-strong band only got together around 11 weeks ago but said they really enjoyed the performance. Formed from a talented group of enthusiasts, the group are now looking forward to their next gig. A raffle drawn during the event also raised over £75 for the Old School Inn's British Heart Foundation Appeal, in what was described as a great night for the band and the public.

| Epworth Bells 4 July 2002 Evening of jazz An evening of swing-style jazz music is taking place tomorrow (Friday) in Epworth. The Old School Inn, under its new tenants Peter and Helen, is inviting music-lovers to a night of local musicians. Formed in April under the direction of Andy Jakob, Room 21 is a small jazz-based ensemble of local musicians, brought together as a result of the Arts College Status won by South Axholme Community School, Epworth. It promises to be an entertaining evening of music and song and weather permitting, the band should be performing outside in the beer garden - a successful arena for similar events in the past. Satin Doll, Georgia, Skylark and Hello Dolly have all been invited. So come along to enjoy the atmosphere and support this latest community project. There will be no admission charge, but visitors may want to contribute towards the British Heart Foundation which is the designated charity appeal of the School Inn Golf Society, under its captain Steve Palmer. |
