| Epworth Bells 9th June 2005 Making a song and dance for charity A night of swing-style jazz will raise money for charity at the Old School Inn in Epworth later this month. On Wednesday June 29th at 7.30pm, the Isle's popular swing band Room21 will play jazz favourites, hopefully outside in the pub's beer garden - weather permitting of course. Conductor Andy Jakob, will lead an entertaining evening of song and dance featuring classic standards Satin Doll, Georgia, and Summertime as well as tunes by The Beatles and Billy Joel. Andy has also composed a bonus piece for the evening which will make its debut outing on the night. The band loves playing the piece and a music publisher has expressed strong interest in Andy's compositions. The event is free to watch and listen but there will be a raffle raising money for the Bluebell Wood Childrens' Hospice which is this year's School Inn Golf Society designated charity appeal. Last year the event raised over £180 for Macmillan Cancer Relief and it is hoped this target can be met again this year. The music will finish at around 9pm, but there will be a quiz night at the pub afterwards starting at 9.30pm. The group has for four years enjoyed the financial support of South Axholme Community School's Arts in the Community programme, but in order that other groups may benefit, Room21 will be looking for sponsors to sustain its place in the community and continue to provide music for charity events. Room21 can be contacted by email at Room21@isleorchestra.fsnet.co.uk |
| Axholme Herald 9th June 2005 And that's jazz - at Epworth A SWING-style jazz evening will welcome all comers later in the month at the Old School in Epworth - and its all in the name of charity. On Wednesday June 29th at 7.30pm, Kevin and Jill of The Old School Inn warmly invite you to an evenng of familiar music given by the community band Room21. Under the direction of Andy Jakob, the jazz-based ensemble "Room21" promises to deliver another entertaining evening of music and song. Weather permitting, the band should be performing outside in the spacious beer garden at the rear of the premises, which has proved to be a successful arena for several events in the past. There will be no admission charge but you may wish to contribute via a raffle to the Bluebell Wood Childrens' Hospice, which is this year's School Inn Golf Society designated charity appeal. Familiar standards Satin Doll, Georgia, and Summertime will feature alongside tunes by The Beatles and Billy Joel, and as a bonus, Andy Jakob has composed a piece especially for the band, which will receive its first performance on the night. The band really enjoys playing it and already a music publisher has expressed a strong interest in his music. So come along to enjoy the atmosphere and support this popular community charity event. Last year the event raised over £180 for Macmillan Cancer Relief so it is hoped that a similar amount may be raised towards this local charity, despite the change to Wednesday. The music will finish at around 9pm, but you may like to stay for the quiz night which will start at about 9.30pm. The group has for four years enjoyed the financial support of South Axholme Community School's Arts in the Community programme, but in order that other groups may benefit, Room21 will be looking for sponsor(s) to sustain its place in the community and continue to provide music for charity events. | Epworth Bells 31st March 2005 Swing is in the air Calling all you musicians with instruments getting dusty in the attic - clean them off for spring and get into swing as it arrives in Epworth next month. Swing band Room21 will hold the first of its nine rehearsals in April and is looking for more players who want to have fun with swing. The group practises at South Axholme Community School - in Room 21 - where Head of Music, Andrew Jackson, is based. Named after the music room itself, the group's title is catchy and fits with the swingin' feel of this entertaining group which has been together for four seasons. It plays big band classics from the swing era as well as more up to date Beatles and Stevie Wonder and one-offs from musicals like Hello Dolly. And everyone is welcome - the group has a variety of players from across the community spectrum. Conductor Andrew Jakob told the Bells/Advertiser what it's all about. "We have an enormous amount of fun and it's the sort of thing people never thought they would get a chance to do," said Mr Jakob. "People often think the only place to do this sort of thing is at school and once you've missed it you've missed your chance. The whole ethos is about having fun with the instruments". At the moment the band has about 10 players including a lorry driver on bass guitar, an occupational therapist on the trumpet and a nurse on keyboard. They also have some saxophones but are lookng put for more woodwind and brass - particularly a trombonist. "It's really pitched at adults across the community," said Mr Jakob, "mostly because the kids have the opportunity in school and with the County bands. We want to reach out to those people who want to do something different - many people go out in search of music lessons so that they can do something like this. Some people can't read music and they shouldn't be put off coming because for some instruments playing with us it's not completely necessary." The final concert will take place at the Old School Inn in Epworth on Wednesday June 29th and is free. The group raise money for charity at the gig - last year they made £180 for Macmillan Nurses. It's free to attend the band which will rehearse every Wednesday from April 20th at South Axholme. New members are always welcome. Contact Andrew Jackson on 01427 872121 or email the band at room21@isleorchestra.fsnet.co.uk. Full details of Room21 can be found at www.isleorchestra.fsnet.co.uk |
